Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, running mate of Mr. John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asked women, especially those who are traders, to exercise patience with their husbands when they are unable to provide the capital necessary to support their businesses. They attribute this situation to the worsening economic conditions.
“Most of the time, when you are unable to get credit from the financial institutions to support your trade, you turn to your husbands for help, but they cannot help because they are either out of jobs or their businesses are not doing well due to the economic difficulties in the country.
“Be patient with them because it is not their fault. The poor economic management has created all this hardship,” she said.
During her tour of the Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang spoke to market women in Dunkwa Mfoum. She stated that the NDC has recognized the difficulties faced by Ghanaians, particularly small-scale business owners and traders, and has created policies to effectively tackle the issue of limited credit availability and high operating costs.
Regarding that, she stated that the Women’s Development Bank would be established by the incoming NDC government to enable efficient lending access free from obstacles like high interaction rates and collateral requirements.
She said that one of the numerous initiatives the incoming NDC government would do to improve the status of women in Ghana is the Women’s Development Bank. She stated that the Women’s Development Bank’s ease access to financing is anticipated to benefit over a million women.
But in order to guarantee that the NDC regains the authority to carry out that goal, she reminded them that the plans can only come to pass if women vote.
‘When women get access to funding to grow their businesses, it will positively affect men, children and households,” she said.
