Dr.George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has been warned by Allotey Jacobs not to be swollen-headed by social media acclamation.
“IGP looks to be winning or he’s becoming the hero in the social media realm,” Allotey Jacobs remarked on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show but cautioned him to keep focused.
“I know Akuffo Dampare well, and I often tell him that he is one of the best IGPs Ghana has ever had, but it appears that you are doing the bidding of the media and bloggers, even though you have no relationship with any of them.
Ghanaian politics should foresee that those who say “laud him” will also say “crucify him”…
So, be cautious!”, he emphasized.
He made these remarks in response to an unfortunate incident in Kumasi on Monday involving some agitated students from the Islamic Senior High School who were protesting the frequent knockdowns of people by motorists in their area and clashed with police officers dispatched to deal with the situation, who ended up firing tear gas to disperse them.
The students were accused of throwing stones at police officers, prompting a strong response from the latter.
Allotey Jacobs urged the IGP to concentrate on training his personnel to be more professional in dealing with mob protests and social unrest.
“I implore you to build more centers in the various regions and allow your police personnel to attend orientation since they are becoming trigger-happy and adding to the stress in this country.”
