Reverend Monsignor Francis Twum Barimah, the Vicar General for the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua has called Catholics in the Diocese not to embark on any street demonstration against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, but rather, should educate people involved to stop it immediately.
According to him, demonstration at this time that Ghanaians are heading to election May be described by some people as “Politically motivated”, therefore, members in the church should not hold placards to the street, rather educate people involved in the illegal activities to stop it immediately.
In a Homily to end his Pastoral Visit to the Saint Mary Parish in Asamankese,Reverend Monsignor Francis Twum Barimah, said the Church is against illegal mining and support calls to end it immediately.
He said “Yes, it’s true that galamsey has created jobs. It is giving most people money but the effects and destruction is big. If someone get money and don’t get water to drink it becomes dangerous. Why should people do such work and destroy Forest and pollute rivers?, Monsignor Twum Barima asked.”
“Very soon, you will get huge money from galamsey but you won’t get food or water to buy and even if you get some,it will be illness.”
Reverend Monsignor Francis Twum Barimah, called on Catholics in the Diocese to dedicate 31st October 2024 for a special rosary prayer for people sponsoring illegal miners and those involved to change their mind and care for the Country’s Land and Rivers.
He called on Catholics registered to vote to participate in 7th December Presidential and Parliamentary elections and ensure that there is peace and Unity before and during and after election.
Asamankese District Police Commander Superintendent Anim ofori who worshiped with the Asamankese Catholic Church during the vicar general’s Pastoral Visit said the police is ready for the general elections, adding, protection will be given to all Ghanaians from now to the end of elections.
He called on Ghanaians, especially the Youth not to be induced by anyone to be involved in any criminal issues that will led them to Court.
