Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on Ghanaians to rectify what he describes as the “wrong choices” made in the 2016 and 2020 elections by voting out the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration in the upcoming 2024 polls.
Speaking to NDC supporters and traditional leaders in Nsawam Adoagyiri as he commenced a five-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Mahama emphasized that “choices have consequences.”
“Choices have consequences; if you make the right choice, it leads to success and a better life. If you make a wrong choice, it leads to hardship and disaster. Unfortunately, in 2016 we made the wrong choice, in 2020 we repeated that choice, and I know on December 7, 2024, we are going to correct the mistakes we made and bring the NDC back to office,” Mahama declared.
The former president highlighted the worsening economic conditions under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He asserted that Ghana was on a path of progress during his tenure but has since suffered economic setbacks due to what he described as the NPP’s failed governance and broken promises.
“When I was President, I won’t say everything was rosy, but comparing our current state to the past, I can proudly say it was far better. At that time, you could buy a ball of kenkey for GH₵1, but today, in Nsawam, the same kenkey is being sold for GH₵5 or GH₵7,” Mahama lamented, emphasizing the impact of inflation and economic mismanagement.
Mahama criticized the NPP’s governance record, accusing the Akufo-Addo administration of failing to build on the progress made by previous governments and shifting blame for Ghana’s challenges to external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. He described this as a lack of accountability and effective leadership.
He also questioned the NPP’s claims of completing 12,000 kilometers of roads, pointing to the poor state of infrastructure in many parts of the country, including Nsawam Adoagyiri. Mahama reiterated his commitment to establishing an industrial zone along the Amasaman-Nsawam-Suhum stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway, aimed at creating jobs for young people.
Additionally, he pledged to build a new market in Nsawam as part of the NDC’s market enhancement program and open a branch of the Women’s Development Bank to provide low-interest, collateral-free loans to traders, thereby boosting economic opportunities for women.
Addressing the need for vigilance during the upcoming elections, Mahama urged NDC supporters to monitor voting and counting processes, encouraging them to record the proceedings to ensure transparency and accountability.
