Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South and a seasoned economist, is gaining significant traction within the ranks of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the potential successor to Ken Ofori Atta as Finance Minister.
The speculation intensifies following the recent call for a government reshuffle by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua.
During a thanksgiving event at the party headquarters on December 22, 2023, Mr. Kodua emphasized the urgent need to infuse new energy into the administration, aiming to reignite hope among Ghanaians and prevent potential electoral setbacks.
While urging exhausted or incapable appointees to step down voluntarily, Mr. Kodua revealed extensive discussions between the party and President Akuffo Addo to reinforce the call for a reshuffle.
Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, recognized for his economic prowess, has long been recommended by many Ghanaians as someone capable of steering the country’s economy toward recovery.
However, with less than a year until the next general election and the recent presentation of the 2024 budget, analysts are skeptical about the impact Dr. Assibey-Yeboah can make in this limited timeframe.
Born on March 2, 1974, in Obo-Kwahu, Ghana, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah boasts an impressive academic background, holding a BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Economics from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), an MSc. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Delaware, USA, and both MA and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of Tennessee, USA, specializing in International Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and Econometrics.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah has a rich career history, serving as a lecturer at various institutions, including the University of Tennessee, USA, Ghana Telecom University College, and Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
His roles also include being a Senior Economist at the Bank of Ghana, a Consultant, and a Board Member for ADB Bank from 2018 to 2021.
Most importantly,he represented the New Juaben South constituency in the 6th and 7th parliament of Ghana, playing key roles in the Finance ,Youth and Sports Committees.
In the 7th parliament, he held the position of Chairman of the Finance Committee.
