Fifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has advised President Akufo-Addo to use prudence and refrain from taking any acts that can have unmanageable repercussions.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, July 4, Fifi Kwetey cautioned Akufo-Addo against misusing his position of authority and to learn from the recent events in Kenya, should he set off a domino effect of uncontrollable demonstrations and turmoil.
In response to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suggestion that Akufo-Addo propose five new justices to the Supreme Court, Fifi Kwetey made her comments.
The NDC General Secretary expressed concerns about the possible undermining of democratic institutions and the rule of law, denouncing President Akufo-Addo for what he called his egregious abuse of power.
He described it as a “grave danger to our democracy” because of the President’s overzealous ambition to dominate every branch of the government.
He cautioned that the nation’s democratic framework is in “grave danger” due to the President’s aggressive attempts to seize control over all branches of government, undermining the concepts of checks and balances and the separation of powers, which are crucial for maintaining accountability and sound governance.
“Again, the naked abuse of power by President Akufo-Addo and his over-zealous desire to control all arms of government poses a grave danger to our democracy and governance arrangements. President Akufo-Addo must note that the ongoing happenings in Kenya serve as a reminder that there is a tolerable limit for the abuse and excesses of the Executive.”
