The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has blamed the recent “dumsor” power outages in Ghana on improper management of the nation’s electricity-generating resources and the collateralization of the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA).
The government implemented ESLA to combine different energy industry levies in order to pay off debt and finance electricity production.
Mahama contends that the government’s choice to collateralize the Energy Sector Levy’s earnings is what’s really caused the spike in power outages.
He highlighted the difficulty of making effective plans under such circumstances and voiced concern about the effects of the unstable power supply on homes and companies. He demanded responsibility and coordinated actions to resolve the ongoing power crisis.
“The country has been plunged into darkness. Mismanagement of our generating assets and collateralization of the ESLA, which was meant to provide the resources to finance current and legacy debt, has led us back into the doom zone.
“The best government can do is to eat humble pie, take responsibility for the problem, and work to address it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I’m aware that businesses and households cannot plan because of the erratic power situation.”
