The Electronic levy (e-levy) has been described as a monumental failure on the part of the Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) to introduce such a tax on Ghanaians.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Officer, the e-levy is not a tax but rather a theft on the part of government to steal the ordinary Ghanaian.
Speaking on GTV morning show on Monday, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi indicated that the introduction of the tax will negatively affect citizens in their day to day mobile transfers.
“Why should I pay taxes on savings. A lot of Ghanaians have resort to MoMo as their savings account so charging tax on such amount is unfair and fraud?” he stated.
He also, quizzed government where the e-levy falls in our taxation as it does not correspond to any of the available tax platforms we have in the country already, such as; income tax, VAT, Cooperate tax, Petroleum tax and many others.
He again insisted that the rationale behind the introduction of the e-levy is dead on arrival as it is illegal and comes at a wrong time, considering the current economic issues of the country.
Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi commenting on the ongoing Town Hall meeting consultations by government on the e-levy, he retreated that such an initiative cannot yield any positive result as Ghanaians are not ready to accept such a thievery agenda of the NPP.
