A fatal road accident at Mamfe Akuapem near the old Electoral Commission office, has claimed the life of a two-year-old boy, Obrempong Offei Adjei Newman who was returning home from school.
The incident was reported to the Mamfe Police Charge Office by the suspect driver, Figgis Amankwah, 35, who was accompanied by Isaac Amatey, 23.
The driver confessed to accidentally knocking down the child, who was subsequently rushed to the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital in Mampong Akuapem.
The boy was pronounced dead on arrival by the medical doctor on duty.
Initial investigations by Police revealed that the suspect driver Amankwah, driving a Hyundai Gold truck with registration number GS 5262-23 and loaded with crates of mangoes, was traveling from Accra to Somanya.
While descending a hill near the old Electoral Commission office, the boy, who had just alighted from a taxi after school, attempted to cross the road to join his mother on the other side. The truck struck him, causing severe injuries.
The victim’s body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Hyundai Gold truck has been impounded, and the suspect driver has been detained to assist in the investigation. Officials from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will examine the vehicle as part of the investigation.
The case is being handled by Chief Inspector Nyalebgedzi Edem Korbla Godwin of the Akropong Akuapem Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) who has assured the family that justice will be served.
