Residents of Tetekasum in Suhum Municipality in the Eastern region have slammed government for failing to provide furniture to Tetekasum M/A Juniir High School forcing four students to share one dual desk.
According to the community, the school did not have JHS therefore the community contributed to put up a JHS classroom block though yet to be plastered ,was operationalized by Ghana Education Service few years ago.
Teachers were immediately posted to the JHS, however, the classrooms have not been furnished since it were opened for use.
Students improvise with a handful of deplorable dual desks from the Primary school by sitting in threes and fours per desk. Others carry plastic chairs to schools.
This affects writing, teaching and learning.
The Amankrado of Tetekasum, Nana Ayisi Gyau said “at first there was no JHS here , our children had to travel about 3 miles to Suhum before they can continue their junior high education. We waited for government to help us with JHS but the help never came so we took it upon ourselves to construct this JHS building you are seeing and it has helped us a lot now students from the adjoining villages attend JHS here.”
The chief stated that lack of furniture in the Classrooms has become a major worry for the community.
” But our major challenge now is the issue of furniture, I wish you came early to see , the children are suffering because at time you will see four or three students on a dual desk and they sit half way due to the inconvenience they go through” he said.
The Assembly member for the area Frank Danso revealed that some students carry plastic chairs from their homes to school during school hours.
According to him , despite numerous effort to channel the grievances and challenges in the school to the assembly no response has been given.
Whiles he called on the residents to exercise patience , he also urged the assembly led by the DCE for Suhum to come to the aid of the school.
