Another canoe accident has occurred on the Volta Lake in Afram Plains leading to the death of 7 persons while 13 have been rescued.
The canoe was carrying 20 passengers from Dzemeni to Havakope on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at about 8:00am but was wrecked by a violent rainstorm on the lake causing it to capsize.
Thirteen (13) passengers were rescued by local fishermen but seven (7) drowned. The deceased include 5 females and 2 males.
The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern regional Police Command DSP Ebenezer Tetteh confirmed the incident stating that the ages of the deceased persons range from 31 to 16 years.
“A passenger boat with 20 passengers traveled on the Volta Lake from Dzemani to Havekope on the Dwarf Island capsizes mid-way after they were caught up in a heavy storm. 7 persons are reported to have drowned. These seven persons include 5 females and 2 males. The ages of the deceased persons range from 31 to 16 years .13 others on board the boat have since been rescued. The bodies have been deposited in private”
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, NIB, and Police are currently at the scene ensuring that no victim is left unattended.
In May 2020, 5 persons died after a boat carrying 25 passengers sailing on return from Dzemeni to Agalakope similarly met a violent storm at about 5:00pm on the lake which capsized the canoe. About 10 persons were immediately rescued.
