The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that “every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.” Central to this vision are the agency’s three transformative results, widely known as the Three Zeros:
- Zero preventable maternal deaths,
- Zero unmet need for family planning, and
- Zero gender-based violence and harmful practices, including child marriage and female genital mutilation.

As part of this commitment, the 8th Country Programme is prioritizing improved adolescent sexual and reproductive health, strengthened maternal and family planning services, and gender equality in the Eastern Region. The region’s inclusion—driven by the dedication and aspirations of its leaders—is expected to significantly advance the programme’s success.
A key component of the initiative is the Adolescent Girls Programme (AGP), supported by the Canadian Government. The programme focuses on empowering girls to overcome the social, economic, health, and educational barriers that hinder their growth. Through this intervention, adolescent girls gain knowledge, confidence, and opportunities to make informed decisions and safeguard their well-being.
Speaking at the opening session of a training workshop under the programme, the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, warmly welcomed participants and commended the Project Team for their dedication in making the programme a reality. She noted that the day’s discussions would open minds, build confidence, and inspire positive decision-making among the youth.
Hon. Awatey also expressed deep gratitude to the facilitators and highlighted that the adolescents themselves remain the heart and purpose of the gathering.
She stressed that the event is more than just another programme—it serves as a platform for empowerment, holistic development, protection, and safety for young girls.

Concluding her remarks, the Regional Minister wished all participants a productive discussion and a successful training experience, expressing confidence that the skills acquired would yield lasting benefits.
