The National Commission for Civic Education in the Akuapem North Municipality has launched it 2023 Citizenship Week Celebration at Grace Presbyterian Church – Akropong with four Junior High Schools in the Municipality, namely Salem Presbyterian JHS, M/A JHS, Methodist JHS and Okuapemman JHS – Akropong.
The Municipal Director for National Commission for Civic Education, Ms. Benedicta Duvor in her welcome address and purpose of gathering made it known to the audience the theme for the 2023 Citizenship Week Celebration, “30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy and Building National Cohesion: The Role of the Youth/Ghanaian Child”.
Ms. Duvor stated that the audience should appreciate the 30 years of democratic journey of the 4th Republic Constitution which is the longest ever since Ghana became a Republic in 1960. She urged students to uphold and defend the constitution for it to outgrow the 30 years’ celebration.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Barima A.S. Asiedu Larbi speaking on the above mentioned theme, acknowledged the role young people play in Ghana’s democracy and shaping the country’s future. He recounted the history of Ghana’s Constitutional Development until 28th April, 1992 when Ghanaians had a referendum to accept the constitution which is 30 years now. He stated that promoting unity and inclusivity in our society is a way of consolidating our constitutional democracy.
The MCE said accountability is taking responsibility for one’s actions and doing what is right. He urged students to be patriotic, peace loving and disciplined to ensure a clean environment, respect national symbols as well as defending the constitution and the laws of Ghana.
He commended the NCCE for organizing the event. Present at the event were head teachers of the four schools and staff of NCCE Akuapem North.
