The Akwamuman Old Students Association (AKWAMOSA) has rejected a decision by Asuogyaman District Assembly and the District Health Directorate to designate Akwamuman Senior High School as a quarantine center for suspected cases of coronavirus in the district.
A statement issued Thursday, April 16, 2020, the Acting President of AKWAMOSA, Stephen Adipa Nyarko questioned “why government instead not consider using its own advanced, much secured and serene facility such as the Volta Hotel to quarantine its diverse class of citizens which includes both the prominent and less endowed in society who could fall victim to this deadly virus, as compared to a high school dormitory begging for refurbishment? What about befitting the Community Centres, the Akosombo Stadium and other parks to serve the same purpose”
Ghana has recorded 641 confirmed cases of coronavirus with 8 deaths. The Eastern Region has recorded 41 cases making it the third-highest among the regions. Most of the cases in the region were recorded among railway construction workers in the Lower Manya Krobo. Samples have also been collected for testing among workers of the same railway company camp at Apeguso in the Asuogyaman District.
But attempt to use the Akwamuman SHS as a quarantined center has encountered resistance by the old students Association claiming it would create fear and panic and psychological torture for students and parents should it be allowed to be used as holding center.
