The Akyem Abuakwa traditional council on Saturday enstooled a parallel Chief at Adoagyiri near Nsawam in Eastern region under the protection of heavily armed police personnel and members of the Okyeman Land Protection Taskforce.
Enstoolment of the new Chief Barima Adu Korkoor III on August 19, 2023 comes amid growing tension between Akyem Abuakwa and Akyem Kotoku traditional councils over who controls Adoagyiri area.
The Youth of Adoagyiri from the side of Kotoku traditional area say the installation of Barima Adu Korkor III is illegal with tendency to create serious insecurity in Adoagyiri.
“What they have done ,they want to turn Adoagyiri into Bawku. We will resist them because Okyenhene thinks his cousin is the President so can do anything.We will fight back”. The leader of the youth group Barima Nana Arkoh Frimpong told Mybrytfmonline.com.
He reiterated that, Adoagyiri has gazetted chief for the past 15 years in the person of Okoanadwo Afutu Dompreh II debunking claim by Akyem Abuakwa traditional council that he is illegitimate chief.
On Monday March 20,2023 ,the convener of the youth group in Adoagyiri, Barima Nana Arkoh-Frempong Oware addressed the media reacting to claims by Akyem Abuakwa that the gazetted chief is not recognized because was not enstooled by Akyem Abuakwa traditional council.
He stated that “We are very law-abiding citizens of this country, and that,the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs on the 2nd February,2022 with suit number- JC/ERHC/AP1/2008 gave legitimacy and confirmed Okoanadwo Afutu Dompreh II as Chief of Adoagyiri and Ankobeahene of Akyem Kotoku Traditional Council, so on what bases is the state secretary and Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council saying that Kotoku Adoagyiri has no chief?
“The youth of Kotoku Adoagyiri would like to state it clear and set the records straight that the statement made by D.M Ofori Atta, State secretary to Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council is untrue and total falsehood with the sole aim of discrediting the reign of Okoanadwo Afutu Dompreh II to achieve its parochial interest. We therefore call on the general public and citizens of Akyem Kotoku State to decline such needles and baseless statement by the state secretary”
The youth called on the President, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo, The Inspector General of Police, Ministry of National security, National Investigations Bureau, Eastern Regional Minister, Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious affairs, Ministry of interior, Ministry of Defence, National House of Chiefs and the Peace Council to intervene as a matter of urgency to maintain sanity in Kotoku Adoagyiri and its environs to maintain peace in the community.
Impasse between the two traditional councils has led to injunction on the celebration of Odwira Festival planned to be organized by Okoanadwo Afutu Dompreh II Chief of Adoagyiri ,and acting on behalf of Kotoku traditional council .
The Akyem Abuakwa traditional council earlier at Kyebi on Monday March 13,2023, addressed the media .
The State Secretary , D.M. Ofori Atta said, Adoagyiri has since historical time been part of Akyem Abuakwa and falls directly under the Apapam stool which is an integral part of the Amantuomiensa Group of the Akyem Abuakwa state,” records indicates that all substantive Adoagyiri chiefs have been part of the Akyem Abuakwa state council inclusive in the records are evidence of land transactions”
