Some angry supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, in Upper Manya Krobo Constituency of the Eastern Region on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, stormed the Asesewa District Office of Electricity Company of Ghana to lock up staff over alleged sabotage light off during the campaign tour of the Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.
The Vice President as part of his three -day Campaign tour to the Eastern Region visited Asesewa on Tuesday but his visit coincided with a heavy rainstorm in the area which led to trees fallen on electricity transmission cables which led to a power outage in the entire Asesewa area but the NPP youth became incensed suspecting sabotage by ECG staff hence rushed to lock them up amidst threats.
The staff left their vehicles and scaled over the walls to their various homes.
“There was heavy rain so the power just went off so quickly we ordered one of our men to go to Amanfrom in Okere area so that if anything we switch to connect the power through Koforidua to Tinkong to Asesewa .so immediately the thing happen we tried that which the power came and reached Bisa Junction but there was another fault there, the high tension cable were brought down by a tree that fell on it so because of that we rushed to break the line at Akateng road to cut the line to switch before we had power. But immediately we reached the office, the NPP supporters rushed us and locked the main gate with their own padlock. So we have to jump the wall before going home. They came here three times tried to fight us. They brought their own padlock and even put red dangers there” a staff narrated.
According to the security man on duty, one of the youth returned at midnight to unlock the office.
Asesewa Area is still in darkness Wednesday morning. According to the Public Relations Officer Eastern Regional branch of ECG, Mary Eshun-Oppong, the engineers are at work to fix the problem to restore power to the area
