The Wesley Methodist Society, Awukugua Methodist Girls’ Fellowship has enrolled 35 girls between the ages of five and 12 at a colourful ceremony on the church premises over the weekend.
The enrolment ceremony was under the theme: “Discipleship: Living the transformed life in Jesus Christ, the role of girls’ fellowship in the school and church- (Romans 12:1-2)”.
Addressing the newly enrolled girls, the Minister in charge of Wesley Methodist Society, Awukugua, Rev. Isaac Yao Boamah, said the Methodist Girls’ Fellowship is recognised by the Conference as an organisation for girls which aims among others to train girls to be assertive disciples of Jesus Christ, worthy ambassadors, and responsible leaders for the church and the society.
Rev. Boamah said it is also aimed at equipping and empowering young girls through skills training and entrepreneurship for their socio-economic well-being as contained in S.O 333 (b)(c).
He advised the newly enrolled girls to be disciplined and take their studies seriously.
He reminded the girls to live a pure life for Christ in order to attract others into the fellowship and also respect their teachers to enable their friends to emulate them.
Rev. Boamah made the above statement during an enrolment service conducted for the girls to make them full members of the fellowship.
The Methodist Girls’ Fellowship has been permitted in all our societies by the constitution of the Methodist Church Ghana for the training of young people in line with the mission and vision of the church.
It has developed from being an organisation for disadvantaged girls serving as maids to embrace all girls and ladies found in our fellowship as Christ’s church and has produced and seen various leaders to guide the organisation.
Taking his turn, the Very Rev. George Darko-Ampem, the Superintendent Minister of Adukrom Circuit, advised the girls to focus on their academic studies and the Sunday school teachings.
In attendance were Diana Asonaba- Dapaah, Deputy Minister of Attorney and Minister of Justice; Mrs. Winifred Seibu Arthur, the Headmistress of Mamfe Methodist Girls’ High School; Nana Asabea Bedie, Awukugua Dabehene, and Dr. Mrs Abena Foriwaa Akwetey, the second female family medicine specialist in West Africa.

DR. ARTHUR KENNEDY STINGS NPP…. DESCRIBES IT AS “ATEYIE MA AWIREFIRI” GOVERNMENT
By Samuel Kwesi Appah-Peniel
Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a leading member of the governing New Patroitic Party (NPP), has said it is strange that President Akufo-Addo who rose to prominence as a protester, by organising the PMFJ in 1977 and leading the Kume Preko demonstration in 1996, now leads a government whose police are detaining people for being citizens, not spectators.
‘”The Asantes are right that “Ateyie ma awirefiri” (success leads to forgetfulness). When similar protests occurred in the months leading to the 2016 elections, most of the members of the “Kyebi Mafia” took part. Why are they against similar protests now?’ he quizzed.
Dr Arthur Kobina Kennedy made the above assertion in a statement entitled: THE PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT ON THE STREETS.
He further said, “My fellow Ghanaians, both major political parties and our institutions have been destroyed by the politics of greed and ethnicity. They must be changed for the good or destroyed in the national interest. I know there are still good men and women in both major parties who care about Ghana and want to fix it. It is time for the patriots to join those on our streets and transform our politics.”
READ BELOW IS THE FULL STATEMENT RELEASED BY DR. ARTHUR KOBINA KENNEDY.
THE PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT ON THE STREETS
Last Saturday, thousands of Ghanaians poured into the streets to protest harsh economic conditions and to demand change. According to a report by Reuters, a demonstrator, Romeo, told reporters, “The average Ghanaian can’t afford three square meals per day— the government doesn’t care.”
On Thursday, September 21st, our founders’ day, the Ghana Police announced that it had detained 49 people for unlawful assembly. It is strange that the President who rose to prominence as a protester; organized for the PMFJ in 1977 and led the Kume Preko demonstration in 1996 now leads a government whose police are detaining people for being “citizens, not spectators “.
The Asantes are right that “Ateyie ma awirefiri” (success leads to forgetfulness). When similar protests occurred in the months leading to the 2016 election, most of the members of the “Kyebi Mafia” were there and now they are against similar protests? Because of why?
What is happening in our streets is the birth pangs of the people’s movement that can transform Ghana. Let us stand with them and with Ghana. They remind me of the thousands who joined the students of Ghana in 1983 as we marched and sang “Revolution sakabo”. I commend Oliver Barker-Vomawor, other leaders and all those who marched for their bravery and patriotism. Before our eyes, power is shifting–from Julobihouse to the jobless– from Parliament to the poor– on our streets. Whether we know and acknowledge it or not, this is a major inflection point in our history.
Americans had the Boston tea party that led to their declaration of independence in 1776 and the establishment of a glorious republic because mature patriotic men like Washington, Jefferson and Franklin stepped forward to lead it. The French the protests of 1789 degenerated into mayhem despite the noble banner of liberte, fraternite, and egalite– because they got Robbespiere and others who brought the “reign of terror”. When the streets of Accra erupted in 1948, we had the likes of Nkrumah, Gbedemah and Ako Adjei etc who led us to independence. Unfortunately, when the streets demanded change in the late 1970’s, men of competence and peace did not step forward and we got 20 years of Rawlings which set us back for decades.
Patriotic, transformative leadership matters!!
My fellow Ghanaians, both major political parties and our institutions have been destroyed by the politics of greed and ethnicity. They must be changed for the good or destroyed in the national interest. I know there are still good men and women in both major parties who care about Ghana and want to fix it. It is time for the patriots to join those on our streets and transform our politics.
Monet said, “Nothing is possible without men but nothing is lasting without institutions “. We need to rebuild our institutions. We must heed the immortal summons of “Yen Ara Yen asase ni” and save this country from the rogues destroying it.
I tell those on the streets that history is on their side–on our side. They should heed the words of Mexican revolutionary, Emiliano Zapata, “If there is no justice for the people, let there be no peace for the government “.
We are the men we have been waiting for.
ALUTA CONTINUA!
WE SHALL OVERCOME!

CAPE COAST CHIEF THREATENS ‘SHOWDOWN’ WITH NANA ADDO OVER LACK OF SEA DEFENCE
From: Eric Annan, Cape-Coast
The Odikro of Ekon, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana, Nana Kwame Edu Ababio II, has threatened to stage a massive demonstration with his people against the Akufo-Addo government over lack of sea defence.
“I want to say that due to the failure of government to construct a sea defence for my people, I will mobilise all my subjects to hit the street of Cape Coast with a massive demonstration,” he declared.
According to him, over 200 houses were washed away recently by tidal waves due to lack of sea defence for residents of the area, thereby making life unbearable for them.
Nana Ababio ll made the above statement during the annual Okusubentsir Apayem Festival celebrated over the weekend under the theme: “Making Ekon Great Through Unity, Love and Education.”
Nana Ababio ll revealed that his community is currently suffering from the construction of the Moree and Cape Coast Sea defence.
“The sea waves from these areas have joined force and found their way to Ekon, resulting in the collapse of many jobs in the community,” he added.
He lamented that this unfortunate situation had contributed to making the fisherfolk in the community abandon Ekon for other communities in search of greener pastures, leaving the fishing community as quiet as a cemetery on normal days.
He, therefore, appealed to the government to come to their aid to construct a sea defence for the residents of the community to save lives and properties.

By Samuel Kwesi Appah-Peniel
The Wesley Methodist Society-Suhum in the Suhum Circuit of the Koforidua Diocese in the Eastern Region has celebrated its centenary anniversary, with a call on Ghanaians to safeguard the peace of the nation.
Delivering his sermon at the event over the weekend, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Asare- Kusi, the Bishop of Koforidua Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, called on Ghanaians to pray seriously for the country ahead of the 2024 elections.
He also advised Ghanaian women to dress modestly to reflect our culture and values, adding that some ladies are killing the men with their indecent dressing which should be avoided as true disciples of Christ.
The Wesley Methodist Society-Suhum centenary anniversary celebration and dedication of chapel was under the theme: “Discipleship: Living the transformed life- The Church’s growth in the past 100 years and beyond”.
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Asare- Kusi on behalf of the Diocesan Executive of Koforidua complimented all and sundry for their contributions and sacrifices, indicating that the Suhum Wesley Methodist Church had given birth to many societies in the area, with the Suhum East Circuit, the latest circuit in the Diocese, being the child of the church.
Taking his turn, the Superintendent Minister of Suhum Circuit, the Very Rev. Samuel Kobina Ackah, said the celebration and dedication of the chapel calls for another landmark reflection, revival and refocusing on growth and Christian maturity, so that all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.
“We salute all the founding fathers and mothers on their roles in the past till now,” the Very Rev. Ackah added.
Highlighting a brief history, Mr. Isaac Asare said the Suhum Wesley Methodist Church was formed in the latter part of 1922 by three pioneers but full church service and worship commenced in 1923, with a few members in a cocoa shed.
He said the main pioneers were Mr. Ernest Ewua Amoah, who was popularly known as E. E. Amoah from Larteh, Mr. J. Aduonu Aidoo and Mr. J. F. Bentum, both Fantes.
He revealed that in 1924, a shed or temporary structure was built for church service at the present site but it took them about five years in 1928 before they were able to buy a few benches.
Mr. Isaac Asare added that, currently, the society has about 35 leaders who help the minister in church decisions.

DON’T FORCE PEOPLE TO DO ABORTION – HEALTH SERVICE WORKERS WARNED
From Mensah Atakora, Asamankese
Madam Berlinda Kpodo, the Eastern Regional Facilitator for Comprehensive Abortion Care, has warned health serrvice workers trained for Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation (VCAT) not to force people to terminate their pregnancies.
Speaking to some participants at Asamankese during VCAT Training for stakeholders in Safe Abortion from some health facilities in West Akyem, Madam Berlinda Kpodo called on Comprehensive Abortion Care Nurses not to be forced by clients without the consent Agreement to terminate any pregnancy, adding that women and girls in Ghana have broad legal access to abortion, but they face barriers when trying to access safe, legal services.
She explained that VCAT aims to move participants towards support, acceptance and advocacy for comprehensive abortion and post abortion care and related sexual and reproductive health care and rights.
She noted that as a result, unsafe abortion persists as one of the country’s leading causes of maternal death.
Madam Kpodo encouraged the participants to share sexual and reproductive health information with the community to introduce themselves to legal abortion providers. She stressed the need for public education with statistics on the consequences of unsafe abortion.
Act 29, Criminal Offenses Act, 1960, (v) supplies or procures a poison, drug, an instrument or any other thing knowing that it is intended to be used or employed to cause abortion or miscarriage, commits a criminal offence and is liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years.
But the Provisional National Defence Council Law (PNDCL) 102 of 1985 which amended Act 29, Section 58 of the Criminal Code of 1960 makes abortion legally permissible if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or if the pregnancy is a threat to the health of the mother or the foetus.
A Public Health Nurse at the West Akyem Municipal Health Directorate, Madam Elizabeth Mensah said the increase in abortion-related cases is attributed to the use of herbal concoction, for which reason the Health Directorate would intensify public education to curb the menace.
The West Akyem Municipal Health Directorate in the Eastern Region has recorded 143 abortion-related cases from January to June 2023.
Out of the number, nine per cent were elective, 16% were induced and 75% were spontaneous abortion. Contrarily, abortion cases for 2021 was 74 against 45 in 2022.

BENKUMHENE OF AKYEM SUBI FIGHTS KADE MP OVER LACK OF DEVELOPMENT
By Samuel Kwesi Appah-Peniel
The Benkumhene of Akyem Subi in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana, Bafour Nana Asiedu Asare I, is in a serious fight with the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kade Constituency, Hon. Alexander Kwajo Agyare, over his lack of initiative to bring developmental projects to the area.
He has dared the MP, saying “Hon. Alexander Kwajo Agyare should come out and point one single social amenity or developmental project he has initiated for the good people of Subi community for all to see ever since he was elected from 2016 to date. I dare him to point just one and not two.”
According to Bafour Asare I, government decided to construct ultra-modern toilets facility but to date they have not been completed despite promises from officials.
To this end, the chief called on the MP to redeem his numerous promises made to the people of the Akyem Subi community for them to also enjoy as citizens of Ghana.
The chief also mentioned that the municipal chief executive (MCE), Hon. Seth Antwi Boasiako, through the assembly, also cut the sod to construct a slaughter house at Akyem Subi but to date it is far from completion.
In addition, Bafour Nana Asiedu Asare I said the Subi Presbyterian Basic School got ripped off by a heavy rainstorm, yet for about eight months now nothing had been heard from the municipal assembly, making it difficult for pupils to study.
“The community has no proper drinking water for the people to survive on. We do not have any lorry station which is a problem for the drivers and passengers in the area,” he added.
Bafour Nana Asiedu Asare I said that the Subi community has a population of about 1,000 who are into cocoa farming, palm plantation, palm oil making, mining among others, yet they are treated with disdain.
He, therefore, cautioned government that if it failed to hear their cry, they would advise themselves in the 2024 elections.
When the TNP NEWS contacted the municipal chief executive (MCE), Hon. Seth Antwi Boasiako concerning the slaughter house at Akyem Subi, he explained that the project had delayed due to land litigation issues by members in the area.
Mr. Antwi Boasiako, however gave the assurance that the slaughter house project would be completed as scheduled as well as the other projects.
However, attempts to reach the member of parliament for the area, Hon. Alexander Kwajo Agyare, on phone for his side of the story proved futile, as his phone was off.
