The Chiefs and Elders of Kwasi Nyarko Community in Upper West Akyem District of the Eastern Region have stopped the District Assembly from Commissioning a market center over lack of toilet facility.
The Market Sheds were constructed five years ago by the Mahama led NDC government but could not Commission before it was voted out.
The Chiefs in the area have since impressed upon the Upper West Akyem Assembly to complete a toilet facility attached to the market before opening for use but nothing has been done about the situation.
The chiefs have therefore stopped the Assembly’s attempts to open the market for use.
According to Solomon Narh, Assembly member, the community has no market center therefore traders risk selling abundant foodstuffs such as cassava, plantain, coconut, and pineapples at the roadside.
The brisk roadside trading endangers the lives of market women and farmers who send their goods to sell.
According to the Assembly member, efforts are now underway to open the market to residents by end of this week as an improvised toilet has been constructed near the market through communal labor.
“We will announce this to the residents this week, we will communicate with the “Mankrado and other elders, and urge traders to occupy and free activities of trading along the road.”
