The Eastern Regional Conference of Heads of Basic Schools has commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his timely action taken against coronavirus which is racing for human life globally.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the management of schools in the country to shut down effective Monday, March 16, 2020, until further notice.
The President gave the order when he addressed the nation on Sunday.
He said, “All universities, Senior High Schools and basic schools i.e public and private schools, will be closed Monday, March 16, 2020, till further notice. The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication, has been tasked to roll out distance learning programmes.”
The President added that “BECE and WASSCE candidates will be allowed to attend school to prepare for their examinations but with prescribed social distancing protocols.”
Below is the statement by the Eastern Regional Conference of Basic Schools signed by their Emmanuel Asiedu Mante.
We, the Eastern Regional Conference of Heads of Basic Schools wish to sincerely commend the president for his timely action taken against our newly born common enemy, the Coronavirus which is racing for human life globally.
Indeed, our elders say: “a stitch in time saves nine.”
We were wondering how our schools would be like from tomorrow 16-03-20 especially where some classrooms are overcrowded in the face of this dread pandemic.
As your lieutenants’ in-charge of the administration of your schools at the basic level, we are much relieved with the announcement of the suspension of all school activities until further notice.
We, however, wish to remind you, Mr. President of the activities of the National Identification Authority (NIA) in our region.
The NIA operations are a crowd gathering one. We wish to call on you to ask the NIA to immediately suspend their activities in the Eastern Region until further notice. Some of our teachers are involved too.
Also, we did not hear you talk about any action taken at our airports and other entry points to the country. Mr. President, your quick action at these points will further give us a better assurance since all the confirmed infected cases have come from elsewhere. Closure of the main airport to some flights especially those from the Americas and Europe will bring a lot more respite to the citizenry.
