A dam constructed by Blue Skies Company Limited has caused serious flood in Mfrebiem, Deikrom and Agyarkokrom in Akuapem South Municipality in Eastern region leading to the death of two children.
About 70 acres of oil palm plantation, cassava, pineapple, maize, pepper and garden eggs have also been flooded.
The two children both males Ernest Mensah, 11, and Kingsley Agormetor, 14 years drown when they went to fetch water from river ‘Nsakye’ near the dam on Saturday 17th June, 2023 after both slipped into the dam.
They were later found after several hours of search by some members in the community and rushed to the Nsawam hospital but pronounced dead.
Kwaku Agormetor the father of one of the drown children blamed the flooding of the river and it banks for the death of the children.
The children will be buried today Friday June 21, 2023.
The Odikro of Deikrom who is also a farmer, Abusuapanin Oko Amoani explained the devastation caused by the construction of the dam by Blue Skies Company Limited on their farms as a result of the recent downpour has made life unbearable for farmers as none can go to farm for fear if being drowned.
Michael Agyarko is the unit committee member of Mfrebiem community revealed that the blockage of the main drains by Blue Skies Company to construct a dam has accounted to the inability of the running water to properly flow which led to the flooding destroying many acres of farmlands in the area.
The flooding has led to contamination of the only borehole serving the three communities fearing it could lead to cholera outbreak.
However, the Okuapem South Municipal Directorate have assured that plans are underway to mitigate the situation even though effort to speak with the Municipal Chief Executive Frank Aidoo was unsuccessful.
