A landlord and three accomplices have been arrested by the a team led by District Chief Executive (DCE) for Fanteakwa South, Hon. Mercy Korang, for allegedly engaging in illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—inside a residential compound at Akyem Osino Zongo in the Eastern Region.
The suspects were handed over to the Osino Police after the DCE, acting on a tip-off, led a joint team of National Security operatives to the scene.
According to reports, the DCE was left shocked upon discovering that the landlord had turned his own compound into a secret mining site.
The suspects, believed to be young men from northern Ghana, were found actively mining underground with tools and washing materials at the scene.
Officials revealed that the suspects deceived residents by claiming they were digging a well, but investigations later uncovered that the pit had been extended deep underground for illegal mining purposes.
Hon. Mercy Korang’s attention was drawn to the matter by a concerned resident who alleged that the Assembly Member for the area had failed to act despite multiple complaints from the community.
Many landlords at Osino Zongo have reportedly sold out their houses and compounds to illegal miners to mine gold raising concerns and agitations.
The DCE condemned the act and described it as a “new and dangerous trend” of galamsey infiltrating residential areas.
She further warned that residents engaged in any form of illegal mining—whether in the bush, on riverbanks, or within their homes—will not be spared.
