Hundreds of residents mostly peasant farmers in Akyem Apedwa
in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region have embarked on demonstration against their Chief, Osabarima Asante Frimpong Manso II,for allegedly selling about 6,000 acres of farmland to private developers.
The angry peasant farmers of Akyem Apedwa have been up in arms with some of their Chiefs for deliberately taking over their lands and selling them out to real estate developers and sand winning companies.
This they say is affecting their sources of livelihood as they are chased away by landguards hired by these investors whenever they attempt to go to farm.
The demonstrators hoisted varied placards to express their displeasure.
Some of the inscriptions read ” Give us our lands”, ”Money minded Chief, Greedy Chief stop selling our farmlands”.
They subsequently petitioned some opinion leaders in the community .
Convener of the demonstration, Ampaw Acheampong, challenged the chief for unilaterally selling their farmlands without their consent for even compensation.
However responding to the allegations the chief of Akyem Apedwa
Osabarima Asante Frimpong Manso II, noted that there is no family land in Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area.
He emphasized that no family in Akyem Abuakwa owns a land that Akyem Abuakwa traditional council is the allodial right owner of all Okyeman Stool Lands.
Osabarima Asante Frimpong, said out of the sale of the lands ,he has embarked on some developmental projects including construction of a modern Junior High School Classroom block to improve quality education.
