Asante Opoku Boadu, a driver of Stem Senior High School at Abomosu in the Eastern Region has alleged that he was physically assaulted by three officers of the Ghana Immigration Service at a checkpoint in Kwabeng while on official duty transporting Examination Papers of the ongoing West African Secondary Schools Certificate Examination(WASSCE).
According to the driver, the incident occurred on Thursday, September 4, 2025, when he was transporting WASSCE examination papers from the Kwabeng Anglican Senior High Technical School in the company of the school’s Assistant Headmaster (Academics), the school’s accountant, and a police officer.
He recounted that upon reaching the checkpoint at about 8:20 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle ahead of him, prompting him to bypass it due to the urgency of delivering the exam materials. He said he was then stopped by other officers led by an Inspector, who allegedly approached him in a hostile manner.
Despite explaining that there were WASSCE papers in the vehicle and pointing to a sticker that read “Urgent WASSCE 2025,” the driver said the officers verbally abused him. The police officer and school officials in the vehicle also tried to intervene, but the situation escalated.
The driver alleged that the Immigration Inspector forcefully opened his door and began punching him while he was restrained by his seatbelt.
Two other officers reportedly joined in the assault. He sustained cuts to his lips, which were later confirmed by a medical examination at the Abomosu Health Centre after the police issued him a medical form.
The assault, according to him, delayed the delivery of the exam papers to the school.
The family of the driver and school authorities are said to be preparing a formal report to the relevant institutions.
The Ghana Immigration Service is yet to officially respond to the allegations.
