Casual Workers employed by the Electoral Commission of Ghana for the conduct of the District Level Elections in the Eastern Region on December 17, 2019, are demanding payment of their allowance.
According to the aggrieved temporal staff of the EC, several Promises made to them by the Commission on payment of their allowances have not been fulfilled.
The effort to get a reaction from the EC on the concerns of the temporal staff proved futile.
Last year’s District Level Election supervised by the Electoral Commission saw the election of 799 Assembly Members and 2,910 Unit Committee Members across the Eastern region except for Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly which was excluded from the election over the unexpired tenure of office of the Assembly Members.
The District Level election is very crucial to local governance and decentralization system. It deepens local participation in decision making and governance.
The year’s election was attached with Referendum but canceled at the wee hours over agitation by a section of the Public.
The Referendum was intended to amend Article 55(3) to enable political Parties directly to participate in the District level elections but opponents of this decision contended that it would further polarize the system which is currently political.
