The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Emmanuel Halm, has revealed thieves have started stealing transformers that convert power to its customers.
According to him, the bad conduct of some Ghanaians is affecting power generation in some towns in the country without electricity supply.
He explained the police in collaboration with the ECG have arrested one person and he is serving his jail sentence for stealing a transformer at Nsawam-Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region.
Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Nartey Solomon of Bryt Fm, Mr Halm urged Ghanaians to pay their bills and desist from illegal connections as ECG will deal with Ghanaians who engaged in illegal connection activities in the country.
He again averred that illegal connections threaten the economy as the state will be unable to generate the right amount of revenue from the sale of power to embark on other development projects in the country.
Explaining the recent power outages in the Eastern Region, Mr Halm regretted the inconvenience and revealed the company is faced with some challenges with regards to their machines and added the ECG is working tremendously to improve service delivery for its customers in the region.
Meanwhile, the ECG has uncovered over 1,000 illegalities carried out by some customers during the first week of meter auditing in the Greater region of Accra.
The illegalities identified included meter tampering and bypass, self-re-connection and unauthorized distribution of service.
