The Eastern South Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service with Headquarters in Kibi has taken custody of five suspects for allegedly posing as officials of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and extorting money from miners in parts of the Eastern Region.
The suspects, identified as Moses Tapiam, 43; Christopher Amakor, 29; Casimir Nunekpeku, 29; Wisdom Miwonuko, 35; and Paul Agbanu, 53, were arrested on Friday, January 2, 2026.
The five men dressed in security uniforms claiming to be NAIMOS operatives from Accra.
They reportedly moved from one mining site to another at Akwadum in the Abuakwa South area near Kibi, where they allegedly extorted money from miners.
The suspects were arrested by the original state backed NAIMOS team while onboard a Mitsubishi 4×4 pick-up vehicle with registration number GS 536-25.
They were subsequently handed over to the Eastern South Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Kibi to assist with investigations.
In a statement signed by DSP David Fianko Okyere of the Public Affairs Unit, Eastern South Region, the police cautioned the public, particularly individuals who impersonate security officers, to desist from such acts, noting that impersonation constitutes a criminal offence.
The police further assured the public that anyone found holding themselves out as security officials without authority will be arrested and prosecuted.
The five suspects will be arraigned before court.
