The Eastern Regional Assistance Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Prison Service, Senior Chief Officer Kumi Richard, has called individuals and non-governmental bodies to support the Prison Service with provisions.
According to him, the government is performing its task by delivering its service to the Ghana Prison Service with the needed provisions, but there is a role for individuals to back the government with its mandate.
Chief Officer Kumi called on churches, companies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and individuals to support the government.
Chief Officer Kumi added that there is a higher number of Prisoners in the Koforidua prison because the station admits prisoners from various areas in the region.
Speaking after the Maiden Eastern Regional Prilas Quiz Competition organized by the Prison Ladies Association (PRILAS), Chief Officer Kumi averred that the prison women play a significant role in the prison service, adding that they help expose substances among bad people especially women during visitation.
He urged the government to recruit many women into the Prison service as they contribute to the service.
‘‘GH¢1.80 allotted for feeding inmates in Ghana’s prisons is woefully inadequate of the current economic’’, Chief Officer Kumi told Bryt FM correspondent, Nhyiraba Nartey Solomon in an interview.
”We know the GH¢1.80 is not enough, but the government can increase it and some inmates were not happy about the quality of food prepared for them at the prison,’’ he said.
The Eastern Regional President of the Prison Ladies Association (PRILAS), ADP Sophia Osei-Bonsu on her part also expressed her gratitude to all the contestants for their participation in the quiz competition.
ADP Osei-Bonsu said that the aim of the quiz is to encourage the members of the Prison Ladies Association.
ADP Osei-Bonsu promised that she will support the Ladies Association with all her strength, adding that ladies have the potential to demonstrate in the Prison service.
She stated that the quiz competition is a program to test the knowledge of the Ladies in the Ghana Prison Service.
‘‘We all revised ourselves with dos and don’ts in the Ghana Prison Service,’’ said ADP Osei-Bonsu.
