The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong has stated that the government has considered education as a major priority and remains committed to the sustained improvement of the sector.
The minister said that it is important to note that government’s commitment to provide quality and accessible education cannot be successful without the support of Directors of Education since they play crucial roles at the local level.
He indicated that in the Local Government Service, the Performance Contract is part of the Performance Management System at the regional level where decentralised local government begins, a Performance Contract is signed between the Regional Minister and the Regional Coordinating Director while at the district level, same is signed between the District Chief Executives and the District Coordinating Directors.
“I am aware of the good work you are doing coupled with the challenges you go through as managers of education at the district level.
However, the challenges are gradually being addressed for effective and efficient service delivery” Hon. Seth Acheampong said.
Delivering a speech during the signing of performance contract between the Regional Director of Education and District Directors on Monday, 24th July, 2023 at the New Juaben SHS Library of the Eastern region, Hon. Seth Acheampong affirmed the District Directorates of Education have their fair share by way of provision of vehicles to enhance the performance of their functions.
He added that the Senior High Schools too have so far received buses and other vehicles to augment the running of the schools and there are still some gaps to be filled in terms of resource allocation.
According to the minister, government has identified lack of resources as a major problem facing most state institutions.
Hon. Seth Acheampong said that spite of the challenges, District Directorates of Education can continue to perform their functions as required of them to ensure improvement in the standard of education at the local level.
He charged them to take note of the key performance indicators and work together with all the stakeholders in their respective Municipalities and Districts to ensure that they achieve the set targets or deliverables.
“As District Directors, you have huge responsibilities in your hands to demonstrate exceptional leadership in ensuring successful execution of the performance contract. You cannot do it all alone and therefore, it is imperative to court the support of all who matter in this enterprise. Effective team work is key,’’ he added.
He again used the occasion to commend District Directorates of Education for working hard to always ensure that children who are the future leaders of this country are properly trained to take up their rightful positions in society at the appropriate time.
He said that the results of both WASSCE and BECE were generally not encouraging in 2021 due to the schools’ drop in performance.
He, however, charged Directors of Education in the region to work hand in hand with the Municipal and District Assemblies to shore up performance, going forward.
“Let us step up our efforts and I strongly believe that we can take the delivery of education to greater heights for the benefit of the good people of this region,’’ Hon. Seth Acheampong stated.
Hon. Seth Acheampong added that the government is very grateful and District Directorates of Education deserve an applause.
