The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Eastern Region has commenced legal proceedings against customers who owe a cumulative GHS 32 million in unpaid water bills, a situation officials say is severely undermining operations in the region.
The company has already processed an initial 15 defaulting customers who are expected to appear before court in the coming days.
The legal action forms part of a broader enforcement strategy aimed at recalcitrant customers who have failed to settle their debts despite repeated reminders, disconnection exercises, and various settlement opportunities.
Regional Chief Manager, Ing. Paul C. Akpanya, described the escalating debt as alarming and detrimental to the company’s ability to provide consistent and quality water services.
“We will go the extra mile within the remit of the law to recover every arrear owed the company. This is essential for sustaining our operations and improving service delivery to the public,” he emphasized.
According to GWCL, the customers facing legal action represent individuals and institutions that have remained in long-term arrears, ignored several payment notices, or refused to clear their debts even after their connections were cut off.
The first group of defendants includes both private persons and corporate entities include Jilcom (Suhum Roundabout Shell Station),Petroleum & Construction Ltd, Constance Baafi
