As part of International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction celebration, the chief of Koradaso near Begoro with the support of the Fanteakwa North NADMO office, GPRTU and other unions as well as residents have embarked on a historic clean up exercise on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
The exercise led by chief of Koradaso Barima Amoako-Ntim II was aimed at clearing bushes that have taken portions of the newly constructed Osiem-Begoro main road, posing danger to road users.
Whiles weedicides were sprayed to burn the leaves, other trees closer to the road were also shaped to give road users clear view especially drivers.
Women were also seen sweeping waste by the roadside to ensure they get rid of all satchet rubbers and bottles.
Barima Amoako-Ntim speaking to the media called for reincarnation of communal labour spirit into Ghanaians as it was a great way in the olden days to help clean our communities and also fix some minor issues that cannot wait for government’s intervention.
He used the opportunity to appeal to the Roads ministry and the Ghana Highway Authority to ensure that all broken road signs are fixed whiles areas that need new ones should also be made available to help curb the rate of road carnage.
“I think we should start educating our children the importance of road signs in schools. That would help them be abreast with their meanings and subsequently be able to apply them whenever they come in contact with these signs”.
“For example, sometimes you see students and even older people standing away from a zebra crossing and want to cross the road. Because most of them don’t know it’s meaning they don’t see any reason to stand by the zebra crossing. But that is where drivers who ply the road will also.be informed that people want to cross the road” Barima Amoako-Ntim II told Kwabena Nyarko Abronoma.
Rev George Opoku Acheampong, Fanteakwa North District NADMO Coordinator on his part commended the chief of Koradaso for leading the crusade and also constituting it with the celebration of the IDDRR.
He emphasised that NADMO has moved from waiting for incidents to occur to prevention of disasters but have rather decided to concentrate on disaster prevention.
He pledged his outfit continuous commitment to dealing with disaster related issues and called for the public support.
Meanwhile, the GPRTU Chairman for Begoro, Alex Amoama Antwi on behalf of drivers expressed gratitude to the chief of Koradaso and NADMO for leading the exercise as it will go a long way to prevent unforseen road accident.
