The Eastern Regional Health Directorate is struggling to establish 100 bed COVID -19 Treatment centers to manage confirmed coronavirus cases recorded so far in the Region.
The Eastern Regional Hospital has been earmarked as a treatment Center for the Region but the Center is not yet ready due to lack of funds. When established, it would be serving majority of the cases from the region.
The bigger challenge identified in the region by mybrytfmonline.com is that most District Government Hospitals are similarly struggling to establish an Isolation Centers for COVID-19 cases.
Currently, about three -dozens of confirmed cases at AFCON Railway Construction Company at Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality are being treated at the Construction site of the company due to lack of Isolation centers.
The GHS was planning to move the patients to a hotel for management of their cases.
The Regional Health Director in a letter dated April 10, 2020, written to the Director-General Ghana Health Service said “there is growing unease at camp B as Positive cases are quarantined and clinically managed on-site. Discussions have begun with the Camp Manager to identify a place where all positive cases could be managed henceforth”
An earlier statement issued Thursday, April 9, 2020, by the Regional Health Director, Dr, Mrs. Alberta Adjabeng Biritwum Nyarko appealed to the public to support the directorate with more Personal Protective Equipments, PPEs, and logistics to manage the cases and facilitate the establishment of COVID-19 Treatment Center.
“Limited quantities of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are being distributed by the Regional Medical Stores to health facilities as and when they become available from Headquarters. We are imploring individuals and groups, co-operate bodies, etc to support this fight against COVID-19 by donating in cash or kind such as PPEs, ventilators, beds, mattresses, infusion pumps, fuel, sanitizers, etc to the Regional Health Directorate to support the work our teams are doing across the region and also to support the setting up of a 100-bed COVID-19 Treatment Centre in the Region”
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Health Directorate has said, it will resend samples of all confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality to Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research for retesting as it is alarmed by the high number of positive cases being recorded.
“Information has been received to re-send samples of the POSITIVE cases to NMIMR for re-testing to clear up some doubts”
Eastern Region has recorded 32 cases -one at Fanteakwa North District, while the rest are mostly from 244 samples being tested as a contact to Indian Expatriate, tested positive on March 31, 2020, at the construction site of Tema – Akosombo – Mpakadan Railway project.
