Former President John Dramani has says it saddens him that Akuffo Addo led government has abandoned a world class hospital project he initiated at Abetifi before leaving office in January 2017.
The abandoned Abetifi Hospital project was part of the six new District Hospitals John Mahama led NDC government was constructing under $175 million contract signed with NMS Infrastructure LTD of the United Kingdom in 2012.
The other beneficiary districts were Kumawu ,Fomena and Garu-Timpane , Dodowa District Hospital ,and Somanya.While some of the hospitals were completed and now operational ,the Abetifi hospital project has been abandoned by the ruling government.
Addressing delegates of the opposition National Democratic Congress from Mpreaso and Abetifi constituencies,Mr.John Mahama expressed sadness that such monumental project funded by tax payers money to improve quality healthcare for the people of Kwahu has been left to rot.
“What saddens me most is that, a first class hospital project we were constructing in Abetifi have been abandoned and left to rot .I am even hearing that scrap dealers are cutting and removing the metals to sell.This is sad because the funds for the project did not come from my pocket .It is state funds.so it doesn’t make sense for it to be left to rot”.
Mr.Mahama intimated that, “this phenomenon is not peculiar to Kwahu. Many projects including schools , electrification which in some places electrical wires and poles were brought to the communities but have been abandoned because the people did not vote for them they have abandoned the projects”.
The abandoned hospital project compelled a group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Kwahu East District in to demonstrate on September 21, 2021 to register their displeasure over the situation for government to continue the project.
Chief of Abetifi, Akyemfuor Asiedu Agyemang II who doubles as Adontenhene of Kwahu Traditional Area endorsed the demonstration and described the abandoned hospital project as disheartening.
In 2019,the Member of Parliament for Abetifi ,Bryan Acheampong however explained that ,NDC government diverted funds for the completion of the project to conduct research about its electoral fortunes in 2016 reason why the project has stalled ,an allegation the NDC described falsehood.
John Mahama has assured the next NDC government will ensure all abandoned projects are completed before any new project begins.
He made special promise to the people of Ketepa a farming and fishing community that their deplorable road will be constructed to Begoro to link Kwahu East to Fanteakwa North District to improve agriculture.
He also said,he will initiate annual meeting with party executives across the country when he becomes president to assess happenings on the ground.
Executives of the NDC at Mpraeso and Abetifi pledged 100% votes for him in the presidential primaries.
