Eastern Regional Chairman of PWDs, Mr Samuel Sarpong Boateng has commended the government for the decision to re-open tollbooths after a year of cancelling their operations.
Despite showing appreciation, Mr Sarpong Boateng appealed to the government to maintain disabled persons employed at the various tollbooths instead of thinking of employing abled persons as ticket issuers.
Speaking with Nyarko Abronoma via phone, the Regional PWDs Chairman also urged the government to complete the payment of monies owed to members before the tollbooths were closed down.
He said the government is yet to contact the leadership on the re-opening of the tollbooths but was optimistic both the two would come to a consensus to have a good finality to the plight of PWDs.
“We are yet to get an official notice from the government on the matter as captured in the 2023 budget statement presented to Parliament. But I am appealing to the authorities not to terminate contracts of PWDs staff because find it difficult in getting employed” he stated.
He again emphasised, “We are also begging the government to clear outstanding arrears owed our members before the closure of the tollbooths”.
Mr Samuel Sarpong Boateng also called on the government to increase the common fund allocation for PWDs to between 5-7% as the current allocation is not enough.
He revealed that most members are not benefiting from the fund just because it is inadequate while those who receive also find it difficult to trade with it as it is not enough in this current economic crisis.
