Asuogyaman district in Eastern region has been hit by flood disaster following continuous spillage of Akosombo Dam .
Volta River Authority (VRA) on September 15, 2023 began controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams following consistent rise of water level upstream of the Akosombo Dam due to heavy rainfalls.
The spillage has been intensified in recent days as the water level rises persistently endangering the dams.
As at October 10, 2023 the
Water Level in Volta Lake was 276.65 ft a 0.22ft rise. compared to previous day.
Spill Situation was 2,547 m3/s.Meanwhile turbine flow for power generation is 1,416 m3/s. Expected total Discharge was 3,986 m3/s.
The spillage has led to devastating flooding in many fishing communities displacing hundreds of residents in Kokonte Kpedzi, Abume, Kudikope, Atimpoku, Ahenbrom, Dzidzokope Mama kope, among others.
Many houses have been submerged. Cages containing large quantities of fishes swept away,other fishes dead due to the aquatic disturbance and high turbidity.
At Kokonte Kpedzi ,seven children are reportedly injured , Several houses collapsed ,cages carried away.
Some of the victims of the flood they have not witnessed such flooding associated with the spillage of the Akosombo dam for the past 12 years.
They called for emergency support from NADMO.
Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Thomas Ampem Nyarko accompanied by some constituency executives of opposition National Democratic Congress,NDC, on Wednesday October 11,2023 visited the affected communities to assess the extent damages.
The MP called on the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to facilitate collection of data of the affected persons and extent of losses to make a solid case for emergency relief intervention.
He urged residents downstream of the Volta river to move upstream as VRA hints of more spillage in the coming days.
