Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has commended the Ghana Prisons Service for its efforts to rehabilitate inmates and build the capacity of its staff.
Mrs. Awatey gave the commendation when the Director-General of the Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe Bonnie, paid a courtesy call on her at her office in Koforidua.
According to the Minister, the initiatives by the Prisons Service, including providing education opportunities, agricultural training, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for inmates, are laudable and align with the government’s efforts to promote rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders.
She noted that such initiatives would help equip inmates with skills to become productive citizens upon release, reducing recidivism rates and contributing to national development.
The Director-General of the Prisons Service, Mrs. Baffoe Bonnie, briefed the Minister on the Service’s activities and programs aimed at improving the welfare of staff and inmates, as well as enhancing security and rehabilitation efforts.
The visit by the Director-General was to brief the minister about the launch of the Eastern Regional “Think Prisons 360 Degrees Initiative” of the Prisons Service. The initiative is a comprehensive plan to transform prisons from mere punishment centers into hubs for hope, healing, and productivity, focusing on staff welfare, inmate rehabilitation through vocational training, agriculture (like agric mechanization), industrialization, wealth creation, strategic partnerships, and modernizing infrastructure to make them self-reliant and contributors to national development.
