The Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has directed the temporary suspension of construction works on the China Mall project at Kenkey Factory, a suburb of Koforidua.
The decision follows complaints and petitions from community members who claim the construction is causing severe flooding in the area.
The temporary halt is to enable stakeholders to assess the project’s environmental impact and identify mitigation strategies.
Mrs. Awatey said flooding poses significant risks to communities, including loss of lives and property, damage to infrastructure, and health concerns due to waterborne diseases. It is against this background that she prioritizes the safety and well-being of community members, ensuring necessary measures are implemented to prevent flooding and protect lives and property.
Mrs. Awatey emphasized that while the completed mall would create jobs and boost economic activities, the lives and property of others should not be threatened.
The Minister’s directive aims to balance economic development with community safety, ensuring the China Mall project benefits the local community without compromising their well-being.
