Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong together with members of the Regional Security Council on Monday February 6,2023 visited troubled Maame Krobo community in Kwahu Afram Plains South District after some 200 security personnel were deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
The joint security team is made up of military and Police.
The move follows violent clashes between local farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the area over destruction of their crops by cattle.
A 54-year-old farmer, Kwasi Tomfor Ahoku was allegedly shot dead by the police at his residence at Maame krobo for killing cattle belonging to a Fulani herdsman on Friday February 3, 2023 around 6:30am.
A resident who is the former Chairman for Afram Plains Farmers Association, Matthew Afrani revealed that about fifteen bullets were fired at the deceased residence, leaving several gunshot marks on the wall of the house.
“After the gunshots the police forced and broke into the room of the suspect and found him dead with gunshot wounds on his body in a pool of blood” he said.
The local farmers went on rampage a touched many houses of the Fulani herdsmen.One person reportedly sustained gunshot wounds in the process.
The Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong in meeting during his visit Monday urged the residents to remain calm for the security to operate to bring lasting peace.
He said the primary aim of the security presence is to maintain low and order and protect lives and properties.
Odikro of Maame Krobo Enock Teye Soda registered his displeasure to the Regional Minister and his entourage by calling for flash out of Fulani herdsmen in the area forever to protect farming activities which is their only source of livelihood.
He said farmers are currently living in fear hence unable to go to their farms.
Widow of the victim Kwasi Tomfor, Rebecca Agbovi,mother of four(4) appealed to the regional minister to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book for justice to be served.
