The Minority caucus on the Parliamentary Health Committee has visited the Eastern region to inspect abandoned health projects.
The committee members visited the abandoned Abetifi Hospital, the Yilo Krobo District Hospital in Somanya yet to be operational and other facilities.
The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said Ghanaians are not angry enough to pile pressure on the government to sit up to complete these projects.
He said the government has demonstrated that it does not take the health of the citizenry seriously.
He called for rewarding the abandoned projects to contract for their completion and operationalization to serve residents quality healthcare.
“The people of Abetifi deserve better than this. We have a Minister responsible for health, and the president himself must be held responsible. I think we are not angry enough… That is why we have come back here after two years. For us, not until these hospitals have been operationalized, we will not relax. We need results and the government must ensure the project is completed,” he said.
He added that the government must “assess the structure, repackage it, and quickly re-award it for the good people of Abetifi to benefit”.
Kwahu East residents demonstrate over the abandoned hospital.
Recently a group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Kwahu East District in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, hit the street of Abetifi, the district capital to register their displeasure over an abandoned District hospital left uncompleted over five years.
The abandoned Abetifi Hospital is part of the six new District Hospitals John Mahama-led NDC government was constructing under a $175 million contract signed with NMS Infrastructure LTD of the United Kingdom in 2012.
The other beneficiary districts were Kumawu, Fomena and Garu-Timpane, Dodowa District Hospital, and Somanya. While some of the hospitals have been completed, others have been abandoned.
The demonstration which saw the people of Kwahu Abetifi coming out in their numbers follows several complaints about government neglect of the project for many years.
The convener of the group, Mr. Godwin Ntiamoah, who addressed the media said, all efforts made to call the government’s attention to the project have proved futile.
