The annual National Police Command Conference is underway at Senchi in the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region on the theme “The role of leadership in preventing violent crimes and promoting community safety.”
Opening the conference on Thursday, May 19, 2021, the Inspector General of Police James-Oppong Buanuh commended the Regional Police commanders and other heads for their roles in ensuring that the December 7, 2020, Parliamentary elections became one of the most peaceful polls.
He stated that the Police administration is committed to ensuring that Ghana becomes the most peaceful country in the world.
Nonetheless, the IGP said terrorising is knocking at the doors of Ghana while armed robbery, murder among other crimes continue to threaten the country’s peace. He, therefore, called for a strategic approach to dealing with these crimes through effective leadership.
The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, extended the facilitation of President Akufo Addo, the Police administration and commended them for maintaining law and order in the country.
He said the Police must use the forums for self-introspection to improve their operations to meet emerging security threats to the expectations of stakeholders, for maximum protection, safe secure and peaceful environment.
“It is an opportunity for the Police Service to conduct introspection of itself to see where you right to emphasize on that, see where you go wrong then change them. It is therefore an important leadership tool. I am congratulating you because you have been consistent. Secondly, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo, I congratulate you for the contribution you’ve made, for the good work that you have done to make sure that Ghana remains a peaceful and safe country. Yes, the Police are first to admit that they can do better.”
The Interior Minister said apart of murder cases which went up, all all crimes decreased in 2020.
