The Eastern Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on government to ensure that all communities affected by the devastating flood caused by the spillage of Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam.
The spillage from the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam which began on September 15, 2023 has caused significant disruptions to communities in the region along the Volta lake, leaving many in total catastrophe.
In Eastern region Communities affected Include: Abom Kwadwo, Abume, Kudi Korpe, and Atimpoku all in Asuogyaman district.
In Fanteakwa District – Dedeso No 10, Adakope, Akakpo Korpe, Adavedzi, Ganyo, Twemeleveme, Kuase, Pretefour, and Abuakwao and in Upper Manya Krobo District – Akateng, Ayensu, and Akorkorma have been submerged.
While the government has recently established an inter-ministerial committee to address this catastrophe, the NDC is urging officials to conduct on-site visits to the affected communities.
Such visits the NDC believes are crucial to fully comprehend the extent of property damage and disruptions to livelihoods, which will inform the necessary relief and compensation efforts.
Additionally, there have been allegations of apparent discrimination within state agencies involved in assessing the devastation.
Notably, certain communities mentioned above have been excluded from the assessment process , according to a statement signed by Kojo Danquah

The NDC is calling upon the President to ensure that these agencies operate in accordance with the presidential oath, which mandates that “the President will do right to all manner of persons in the country.”
The NDC is expressing solidarity with the affected individuals and communities, while urging the government to take immediate action.
The NDC says in these challenging times, it stands in unwavering support of the affected residents and salutes those who have selflessly responded to the call for emergency operations and life-saving assistance within and beyond these afflicted communities.
