Yaa Ansaa Safori, a Member of Parliament hopeful for the New Juaben South constituency, calls on local farmers to explore opportunities beyond Koforidua’s borders and leverage available arable lands in neibouring municipalities to expand their farms.
Responding to concerns about limited access to land due to rapid urban development in New Juaben South,Yaa Ansaa Safori emphasized the potential for farmers to expand their agricultural activities to the parts of the region.
She also called on residents to engaged in backyard farming.
Yaa Ansaa Safori, a sponsor for the Municipal Best Youth Farmer award, which went to Amos Nyalimo .She generously donated items including a Polytank, GTP Wax print, Wellington boots, cutlasses, knapsack machine, and a box of pesticides.
The 39th National Farmers Day celebration for new Juaben south was held at Mile-50 community.
Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South, Isaac Appaw Gyasi, echoed the call for youth exploration in the agriculture sector, highlighting the lucrative business opportunities within the food system value chain.
He stressed the government’s commitment to supporting large-scale farmers through phase II of the “Planting for Food and Jobs” program.
Gyasi underscores the importance of harnessing technology and innovation to enhance productivity and achieve food security.
He notes challenges affecting food security, including low productivity, limited market access, climate change, and improper farming methods.
The Municipal Assembly’s efforts, including the distribution of season birds, coconut seedlings, oil palm seedlings, and fall army worms chemicals, are highlighted. The Eastern Commodity Satellite Market Event, promoting value addition to agri-products with 21 items processed for sale, is also mentioned.
Tharzia Numako Akwetey, New Juaben South Municipal Director of Agriculture, acknowledges inadequate farmlands in the municipality but emphasizes the deployment of innovative approaches, including backyard farming, to sustain food security.
The event honored 17 farmers, with Emmanuel Gbeve from Trom being recognized as the overall Municipal Best Farmer for 2023. Gbeve, with diverse agricultural ventures, received a tricycle, GTP Wax print, Wellington boots, cutlasses, a knapsack machine, fertilizer, pesticides, and a certificate.
Other notable awards include Best Disabled Farmer going to William Bako, and Amos Nyalimo adjudged Municipal Best Youth Farmer. Elizabeth Serwaa received the Municipal Best Woman Farmer award.
