The Minister of Roads and Highways Hon. Kwasi Amoako Atta is optimistic that construction of the 36.1 km road from Nkurakan through Adukrom, Aseseeso, Trom junction to Akuse junction in the Eastern region will be completed on time.
The contract which was awarded to General Construction Company Limited started in January 2021 and the expected completion date is the 19th of July 2023.
Currently, the road is 63% complete.
The Minister of Roads and Highways said this when he was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Okere Dan Botwe and officials from the Highway ministry to inspect an ongoing road project.
Amoako Atta called on Ghanaians to be patient as the government is fixing the huge deficit in the road sector.
He explained that as of 2017 the total road network in the country was between 78,000 km to 80,000 km but per the provisional estimate of the road ministry, currently Ghana’s total road network size is around 94,000 Km which the government estimates to hit 100,000 Km by the end of 2024
“People should know that roads in the country or whatever activity, not even only roads, whatever activity anybody thinks of cannot be done simultaneously everywhere so my message to areas that are yet to have their turn of road construction is to be patient because it is only reasonable that you wait until it gets to your turn,” he said.
“Everybody should know that no government can tackle all road networks within the shortest period, it must be done gradually because of funding and other related issues hence the need for all of us to be patient and not to embark on demonstrations that end up destroying the roads through the burning of tyres”.
He revealed that “as of 2017 the road network was between 78,000 km to 80,000 km but per the provisional estimate of the road ministry, currently Ghana’s total road network size is around 94,000 Km of which the government is targeting to head towards 100,000 Km by the end of 2024”.
The minister explained that so far as the ministry is concerned, road construction is going on all over the sixteen regions of the country as well as all the 275 constituencies across the length and breadth of the country so the road sector is robust and everybody is seeing it.
He said, “because of the success of the year of roads declared by H.E the president of the republic Nana Akuffo Addo in 2020, it was repeated in 2021 as second year of roads and it may be interesting to state that despite the devastating effect of COVID-19 and the havoc experienced worldwide, roads construction throughout the country was going on and never halted so it has been very successful”.
