The Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),Jeff Konadu Addo has argued that if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia fails in the December 7 presidential election, future Muslim candidates may face challenges becoming president.
Addressing supporters of the party at a campaign lunch by New Juaben South Member of Parliament, Michael Okyere Baafi, the Regional Chairman stated that Christians across the nation are prepared to support Dr. Bawumia, and he urged the Muslim community to unite in voting for him, as this is a historic opportunity for Ghana to elect its first Muslim president.
Jeff Konadu Addo warned that a failure by Muslims to support Dr. Bawumia could have lasting implications, as future Christian voters might view the outcome as a precedent against backing Muslim presidential candidates.
“If you are a Muslim listening to me, you have a responsibility. When you go to the polls and you disappoint Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ,you are disappointing your children in future because if any Muslim contests for President, Christians will say when a Muslim was made Presidential candidate you (Muslims) disappointed him so no body should bring a Muslim again. ” said Jeff Konadu.
Current Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is contesting the December 7 Presidential polls with John Dramani Mahama who is staging a comeback after losing the 2016 election as President having served for one term.
Some 18,772,795 valid voters are expected to participate in the December general elections, according to provisional figures from the Electoral Commission.
Out of this total, 9,690,173 are women, and 9,082,622 are also men.
