Miss Hannah Alagbe, Assistant Administrative Manager at the Road Safety Authority has shed light on a crucial aspect of road safety, the definition of a pedestrian. Her insightful explanation revealed that being a pedestrian is not solely determined by one’s lack of vehicle ownership.
In an interview with Kwamina Sam Biney on Bryt Adekye Mu Nsem, she stressed that a pedestrian is anyone who walks on the roadside, regardless of their socio-economic status or vehicle ownership.
“You can have the biggest and most expensive cars in the world, but the moment you step out and walk on the roadside, you become a pedestrian” she emphasized.
According to her, the public have to understand the importance of acknowledging that road crashes are often caused by human error, rather than mere accidents and called for an increased awareness among road users.
“Pedestrian is someone who walks at the road side, in fact you can have the biggest and expensive car ever in the world but the moment you step down, you have also become a pedestrian”.
In addition to her thought-provoking insights, Miss Alagbe shared practical advice for drivers, indicating,, “When driving, ensure you can see the rear tires of the car ahead of you” she recommended. This simple yet effective tip can significantly reduce the risk of road crashes”.
Miss Alagbe and her team pledged their commitment to promoting road safety awareness through education and outreach programs and by teaching school children how to use the road safely
It is aimed to cultivate a culture of responsibility and respect for the rules of the road.
