The Women’s wing of the National Union of Ghana Students(NUGS) in collaboration with some nurses in the Eastern region has organized free breast cancer screening for market women and female traders in Koforidua as part of the celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The screening exercise was preceded by aggressive public education on breast cancer at market centers, lorry stations, and streets of Koforidua.
Dozens of women were screened by expert nurses at the forecourt of the Central Police station.
Ohemaa Bediako, the National women’s Organizer of NUGS urged women to regularly examine their breasts for early detection and treatment.
“The breast cancer screening exercise. As students who are fortunate to have an idea of what breast cancer is and the harmful effect it can bring to bear on humanity, we decided not to keep mute but to tour the country and create awareness on breast cancer and to educate people on the urgent need to regularly visit the hospital to screen their breast”. She said.
She explained that the majority of the women screened were free from breast cancer and this she said was a good indication that Ghanaian women are paying attention to protecting their breasts.
Some of the women who were screened were excited to have experts declaration on their status clearing their anxieties.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Statistics from World Cancer Research Fund indicate that Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide.
There are about 1.7 million new cases and 522 000 deaths from breast cancer each year worldwide.
In Ghana, Breast Cancer is the second commonest cancer among women. It kills 3000 women annually in the country.
Breast Cancer accounts for 15% of all cancers and 40 % of female cancers in Ghana.
Early diagnosis remains masterstroke for breast cancer control and prevention of its related deaths. However, if detected late, curative treatment becomes practically impossible.
