Over 20 deaths have been recorded just two weeks into December 2021, according to the Eastern Regional Directorate of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).
Speaking to Kwabena Nyarko Abronoma on Bryt FM Wednesday evening news, Mr. Denis Yeribu revealed that a total of 427 deaths have been recorded whilst 2,369 persons have also suffered several degrees of injuries in the region from January-November this year as a result of over 2,400 road crashes.
He indicated that out of the total number of road crashes experienced, 430 of them are associated with activities of motorbikes which represent 30%.
Mr. Yeribu explained the Ashanti region tops all the other regions in terms of the available statistics on road crashes, with Greater Accra and the Eastern regions follow respectively.
He attributed the surge in cases to indiscipline on the part of many drivers and speeding which has been the cause over the past years despite several measures laid down by the various stakeholders.
Commenting on his outfit’s responsibility in dealing with the issue, he stressed that the NSRA has educated over 10,000 people on road safety while about120 government-employed drivers, as well as over 600 commercial drivers across the region, have also been trained.
He was optimistic that training and education will help reduce cases of road crashes and appealed to all stakeholders to join the fight against the canker.
The NSRA has pledged to strengthen its activities this Christmas season and called for the collaboration of all road users.
