Patients at the Eastern Regional Hospital are urgently appealing to the government to address the demands of striking laboratory technicians to prevent a health crisis.
They stress that laboratory services are essential for quality healthcare, as treatments rely heavily on accurate test results.
The strike, initiated by the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers Union on Monday, June 17, over better working conditions, left many patients unable to obtain necessary laboratory tests and results, leading to widespread disappointment and concern.
The strike also affected diabetic care as patients in need laboratory results of their sugar levels to inform medical intervention cannot access services.
The National Labour Commission (NLC) on Friday directed the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) to end their strike and return to the negotiation table with the government.
This directive follows an emergency meeting held on Thursday, June 20 involving representatives from MELPWU, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Finance Ministry, and the Health Ministry, aimed at resolving the ongoing dispute.
