The Eastern Regional Office team of the Public Utility Regulation Committee (PURC) recently held an interactive session with the Kuano community in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region which also falls within Asamankese District of the utility services.
The event aimed to educate the community on the Commission’s role and address local concerns regarding utility services.
The team from Koforidua provided a comprehensive overview of the PURC’s functions, including the types of complaints handled, tariff classifications, and the decisions made during quarterly reviews.
Additionally, tips on energy and water conservation were shared with the community members.
During the session, community members voiced several concerns.
They questioned why some Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) officials charge reconnection fees without providing receipts, the lack of education on meter reading, and the difficulties in extending the ECG network to new areas despite following procedures.
Other issues raised included the disconnection of services in customers’ absence and the issuance of bulk bills after new meter installations.
Following the interactive session, the ECG and PURC team reviewed all the complaints received. A total of 52 community members attended the session, and 29 complaints were recorded. To ensure continued support and assistance, contact leaflets with PURC’s location and details were distributed to the attendees.
