The Regional blood donor organiser at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, Madam Philomina Quayson says shortage of blood in various hospitals in the region continue to claim lives with pregnant women and accident victims worse affected groups.
According to her, blood transfusion is a critical part of quality emergency healthcare delivery however many blood banks are struggling to get the required blood stock to meet emergency demands.
Philomena Quayson says the situation becomes dire when students go on vacation since they are major blood donors.
Madam Philomina Quayson said this at Odumase Krobo in the Eastern region when MTN Ghana Foundation partnered Manya Krobo Senior High school(MAKROSEC) and National Blood Bank to donate pints of blood to support various hospitals in the region as part of MTN’s annual “Save a Life”blood donation exercise on Valantine’s day
She encouraged corporate institutions, churches and general public to regulary donate blood to help save lives.
MTN Ghana Foundation’s annual blood donation exercise dubbed “Save a Life” resumed this year after two years break neccesitated by COVID-19 pandemic.
The program was initiated to give staff of MTN, its trade partners and the public the opportunity to show love on Valentine’s Day by donating pints of blood to boost quality healthcare.
The blood donation exercise which took place simuntaneously in all 16 regions this year targeted collection of 4000 units of blood to stock various blood banks across the country.
The Territory Sales Controller , Eastern Regional Hospital , Ebenezer Okaikoi – Tetteh said the foundation will continue to support various hospitals to save lives and enhance emergency healthcare delivery.
He said the Eastern Regional office targeted 300 units of blood to stock the blood bank.
