A sick commercial driver arrested for a traffic offense has passed away while in the custody of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at the Eastern Regional Police headquarters in Koforidua.
The driver, who had been apprehended by the police for a traffic violation, reportedly complained of feeling unwell.
However, MTTD officers suspected him of feigning illness to evade investigation and prosecution.
Tragically, despite his pleas and deteriorating condition, the driver collapsed while in custody.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Sources indicate that the driver had been unwell for some time, yet he continued to work.
Even though the police could not accused of foul play, the incident calls for the need for improved protocols and sensitivity in handling detainees, especially those who may be experiencing health issues.
Investigations should be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the driver’s death and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
